Velvety, fresh, woven.
This hefty premium bottle is filled with old vine (planted in 1968) Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Petit Verdot 10%) Merlot (11%), and smatterings of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, which makes it a very different blend than previous vintages. It was aged two years in mostly French oak barrels and is a limited release.
The first Garland was released to celebrate the winery's 50th anniversary in 2019.
It's a plush and velvety red with loads of kirsch and cassis aromas layered with licorice, vanilla, clove, cinnamon, pencil shavings, rose petals and pipe tobacco. The 2018 seems even more harmonious than previous vintages; generous fruit and mocha lead the charge, while tobacco lingers on the finish. Nicely woven, wonderful freshness reigns in what could easily become excessive. There is elegance in this bottle.
