Minerality, oak, lemons
Stoneboat Vineyards, located on the Black Sage gravelbar in Oliver, is owned by Rudy Verhoeff and Kyla Richey, former professional volleyball players. They also own Valley Commons, is a winery established in the District Wine Village in Oliver in 2021.
Both wineries fall under the Verhoeff Group of Companies, which is headed by Paul Verhoeff, Rudy's father. The family also owns a flooring company, a brewery and restaurants in the Fraser Valley.
The grapes for this wine come from Oregon State.
Fermented and aged in neutral oak barrels and stirred weekly for four months, this reserve tier Pinot Gris suggests stony mineral aromas woven with charred lemons, oak spice, yellow apples and honeycomb. It's not a quaffing white, it has weight and more structure than you might be used to in a Gris with primary flavours of lemon, white fruit, wet stone and mild spice. I find the oak contact distracting, it clings to the finish and cocoons the entire wine despite being in neutral barrels.
