Wine Folly: The BookWine Folly

Flipping through, it made me wonder, why wasn't this book around when I was studying to be a sommelier?
I mean, it's wonderfully straightforward and the infographics are phenomenal - adeptly summarizing the basics.

It is undeniably as useful to the wine expert as it is the novice.

Wine Folly has been on my radar for several years, yours too I would guess. If you have ever retweeted or posted a wine infographic on Facebook, I would bet dollars to donuts it was developed and designed by Wine Folly.

When I launched WineDiva, nearly 12 years ago, the site was meant to be approachable and fun. I was essentially thumbing my nose at a too often snotty and exclusive segment of the wine industry.

I never understood how the winemaker could be so humble while the person writing about wine or flogging it, could be so damn annoying.

I digress.

Wine Folly follows the same mantra. They have made learning about wine engaging and easy - completely accessible to the newbie while cleverly captivating the enlightened wine lover.

So, when I was asked to take a gander at an advanced copy of Wine Folly: The Essential Guide to Wine, I jumped at the chance.
Written by Madeline Puckette (the name you'll most commonly see associated with the site, as she is the inspiration behind the content on Wine Folly) and Justin Hammack (founding partner of Wine Folly), the book is as addictive as the site.

It starts with the fundamentals - wine basics, tasting wine, handling wine and food and wine pairing.
Remember, the beauty of Wine Folly is its simplicity. This is not a tome but a straightforward series of colourful graphics with just enough text to educate our increasingly short-attention-spanned selves.

It's just enough information to make you dangerous - so to speak.WineFolly

Next, styles of wine delves into sparkling wines, light-bodied whites, full-bodied whites, aromatic whites, rosé wines.... you get the picture.

Additionally, the authors do a bang-up job of giving you some solid insight into the major winemaking regions of the world. Puckette and Hammack provide great maps and break down the regions and varieties, which are most important to each area.

The timely release is perfectly suited to Christmas gift giving, but I'm pretty sure you'll buy another for yourself after you flip through it.

The book will be released in September 2015 by Avery Books. It will also be available as an e-book.
Price for the hardcover: $25 US, $30 Canada
