My thoughts were split in two directions when I saw the sword wielding Roman soldier on the label of this well-priced Sangiovese. Direction one - it's going to be bold and bloody, charging in and conquering my palate and direction two - men in sandals and skirts (a la Gladiator)) which would ultimately produce the same result as direction one....
It turns out, my imagination was a little too colourful. Rather, this is an approachable red, with a bright ruby tone and aromas of red cherry, raspberry, sweet spice and cocoa, a brush of violets and sandal, er saddle leather. It's medium-bodied (a slight chill on this bottle wouldn't hurt a bit) and only 12.5% alcohol, with sweet, juicy fruit and balanced acidity. In fact I found myself returning to sip it again and again. Fresh, very easy drinking and smooth.
An everyday dinner wine to pair with tomato-based pastas, simple Margherita pizzas, grilled fish, slow cooked meats and platters of cheese, salami and olives...
