Brooding, bold, spiced.
While I've not had much opportunity to taste the wines of Culmina this is the second vintage of Hypothesis the first being the 2013) I've tasted.
Located on the Golden Mile Bench, Culmina was established by the Triggs family (of Jackson-Triggs fame) in 2007 and was sold in 2019 to Arterra Wines Canada.
Hypothesis in Greek means proposal, is a flagship Bordeaux red (Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot), which was aged in a combination of new and second fill French oak barrels.
Expect black plums and dark chocolate, licorice root and molasses, balsamic, brown spices, fluer de sel, green bell peppers and pipe tobacco on the nose. The palate is on the brooding side; fruit takes a backseat to spice, black chocolate, espresso and rich earthy flavours. It's a red with grip. Best decant and serve with hard cheese, red meats, grilled eggplants and mushrooms.
Second review: March 2023
Notes of sage and wildflowers, plums and chocolate, leather and spices, tobacco and graphite lead to a structured palate. Flavours of wild red berries, wild herbs, graphite, cedar and charred spices dominate. Good freshness.
