Retro Wine Party

Part II

In November Wine Diva did a short story reminiscing about retro wines. I've had an amazing response from readers, all positive as they shared their personal (secret) favorites. I talked about Lonesome CharlieBlue Nun and Mateus as well as my own youthful indulgence-Moody Blue (which I mistakenly called Moody Blues).
Well, in my searches I didn't get lucky with my mother's Lonesome Charlie but I did get some face time with Moody Blue!

According to Bob who was working at Andres Wines back in the day, and still is (although Andres is now Andrew Peller Limited) Moody Blue was launched in August 1974 and was named for the band...Moody Blues.
Its recognizable denim pocket label was modeled after a pair of jeans and was sold across Canada and then exported into Washington State in 1975.
At that time it was available in 187ml x 4pk, 750ml and 1.5L but is currently only sold in Ontario in the 1.5L size but with the same classic label.

A
nd Kathy, who
also works for Andrew Peller Limited and also worked for (formerly) Andres Wines at that same time remembers the Moody Blue being released to coincide with Elvis Presley's album...Moody Blue!

If you recall, I did a review on Baby Duck in that initial piece-something I was quite proud of but as Bob pointed out, I neglected to remember Fuddle Duck, Frosty Duck and Luv a Duck!
He explained that Frosty Duck and Luv a Duck were also 7% Sparkling wines (like Moody Blue) produced by Jordan-Ste. Michelle in BC but Fuddle Duck was produced by Uncle Ben's Winery (now Mission Hill). They were all sold during the 1970's and 1980's!
How about that trivia!

Well Suffice it to say, I'm fairly certain I won't get a crack at the other "Ducks" but through top-secret methods Wine Diva was able to obtain a 1.5L magnum of the Moody Blue.

And here she is in all her glory...

Moody Blue  Sparkling Wine,  Andres Canada-
Wine Diva (pre-Diva) drank this pretty pinky-red, lightly sparkling wine out of straws at outdoor high school parties called "pit parties" (obviously because they were usually held in tastefully decorated gravel pits). I'm too old to apologize now, but when I found out this wine could be had in a 1.5L bottle in LCBO stores for a mere $12.00 I knew I had to revisit my naughty-naive youth.
The scripted text on its classic denim label cheekily states "A sassy sparkling blueberry flavoured wine refreshing when cold" and I would not hesitate to agree.
The Moody Blue has aromas of concord-grapes with hints of blueberry compote and penny candies. The flavours are sweet (although not as sweet as expected) reminiscent of cinnamon hearts and chalky 'sweet nothing's' candy.
Sweet memories!
