Barbeque Perfect Pairings
Barbeque Sure Bets

Grilled foods, those cooked on the barbeque tend to have more depth of flavour and an intensity rounded out with char and smoked flavours. And often, they are accompanied by spicey/sweet and tangy sauces. Wines of equal intensity are recommended.

Yalumba 'The Scribbler' Barossa Valley Australia, 2009
Readers rated this wine:

Australia's oldest family-owned winery makes a fantastic selection of wines, including this Barossa Valley blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (61%) and Shiraz (39%).
It has intense black cherry and berries on the nose, layered with brown spice, mocha, rich dark earth and savoury undertones of meat and pepper. The palate is just as rich - it has a supple, glycerol weight and smooth texture. The finish is long and powerful and trails spiced chocolate flavours.

Alpha Estate Syrah, Turtles Vineyard, Florina Greece, 2008
Readers rated this wine:

This Greek Syrah is extremely savoury - black fruit is wrapped around char grilled meat, brown spice, sunbaked earth, bay leaf and black pepper. The palate is supple but just as succulent - loads of rich dark plums, smoked meat and toasted oak flavours with a bittersweet chocolate on the finish.
A wine for: roast lamb, game meats and hard cheeses

Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley, 2010
Readers rated this wine:

If you follow me, you'll know that Grenache is one of my favorite red varieties. I've seen some of Yalumba's old vines in Barossa and they are stunning at over 100 years-old. The grapes that go into this particular Grenache are somewhat younger, but still between 30 and 70 years-old.
It is a gorgeous wine, scented with violets and raspberry jam, vanilla and sweet spices. The palate is silky and wonderfully fresh, laden with raspberry, spice and chocolate flavours. It has a wonderful concentration and tastes like...more.

Mollydooker 'The Boxer' Shiraz, South Australia, 2010
Readers rated this wine:

NEW reduced price.
This wine lives up to its name. In fact I wrote about this wine as a perfect game day wine for the holiday issue of TASTE magazine - and it is, especially with the new lower price.
It comes out of the glass swinging - potent blackberry and blueberry, rich mocha and chocolate liqueur alongside spice cake. That liqueur-like intensity comes through on the palate as well. It's a heavyweight of supple berry fruits, sweet spices and chocolate with a chewy mocha flavoured finish.
Pair with chili, sweet and spicy ribs, burgers or pretty much anything you can arm wrestle onto the grill.

Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec, Lujan de Cuyo Argentina, 2009
Readers rated this wine:

Spicy purple berries, plums and vanilla, cloves and licorice, with plush chocolaty aromas atop succulent notes. The palate leads with supple and sweet fruit, it has a potent, liqueur-like intensity. It's also an approachable wine, but not one lacking structure. Wonderful balance here and a delicious baking spice and vanilla flavoured finish.
Great for anything you can throw on the barbecue, burgers or even pizza.

Galil Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Galilee, Israel, 2010
Readers rated this wine:

This tasty Kosher Cabernet comes from the higher altitude northern Galilee viticultural region.
It's a fragrant wine, leading with sweet cassis, vanilla and baking spice atop fresh mint and earthier undertones. The palate follows suit offering blueberry and cassis mixed with savoury flavours and spice. It is fresh with a smooth wight and persistent finish.

Cupcake Vineyards 'Red Velvet' California, 2011
Readers rated this wine:

The label of this sumptuous Zinfandel-based red says it all - red velvet like its namesake rich, red chocolate cake.
The aromas are velvety, luring you in with heady chocolate, purple berries, vanilla and baking spices. The palate is supple with generous berry, mocha chocolate, vanilla and licorice flavours. Truly decadent, a satisfying crowd-pleaser.

Domaine Jean Bousquet Cabernet Sauvignon, Tupungato Mendoza Argentina, 2011
Readers rated this wine:

The vineyard for this wine is at 1200 meters above sea level in Tupungato Valley and it comes from organically grown grapes.
The aromas are saddle leather and earth, black currents brown spices and cocoa. It has lovely freshness in the mouth with spice, cassis and toasted spice flavours, which lead to a cocoa and tobacco finish. It's medium-full on the palate and has nice length.
A red to pair with hearty pastas or red meats.

Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. 'Drops of Jupiter' California, 2011
Readers rated this wine:

Well if the front label doesn't get you and the back label doesn't hold your attention, perhaps the wine itself will?
Okay, this is a fun wine, nothing serious but it is a seriously tasty (and that's what counts right?) red made by winemaker James Foster for Jimmy Stafford, founding member of the band, Train. Partial proceeds from each bottle sold go to support Family Home Inc.
Aromas of chocolate take the lead and are layered with raspberry,, blueberry and cherries, vanilla and baking spice. The palate is equally sweet and supple. Flavours of juicy berries, mocha and sweet spice trail across the smooth finish. If you love Zinfandel, you'll love this wine.
Pair with burgers, sticky sweet ribs, pizza or chilidogs while you're watching the game.

Urban Uco Malbec~Tempranillo, Uco Valley Mendoza Argentina, 2011
Readers rated this wine:

Certainly not your typical blend, this Urban Uco red really pops out of the glass!
It'll have your mouth watering with the sunwarmed raspberry and blueberry aromas, vanilla and baking spices, cedar and dried violets with a core of sweet coffee. The palate is supple, there is gobs of fruit here rounded out with sweet spices and roasted coffee flavours. It has a bitter, not unpleasantly so, finish.
