Barbeque Perfect Pairings
Barbeque Sure Bets

Grilled foods, those cooked on the barbeque tend to have more depth of flavour and an intensity rounded out with char and smoked flavours. And often, they are accompanied by spicey/sweet and tangy sauces. Wines of equal intensity are recommended.

Tscharke Barossa Gold Shiraz, Barossa Valley Australia
Readers rated this wine:

This is a succulent Shiraz, made to pair with grilled meats, hearty pastas or hard cheeses.
It's a savoury and brooding red, dominated by bitter chocolate, roasted coffee, toasted brown spices and char atop blackberry and mulberry. The palate is is bit lighter than you'd expect, from the initial nose; it has chalky tannins throughout and wild briary fruit layered with dark carob, espresso and heavily toasted spice and oak flavours.
Not your typical Barossa Shiraz.

A mouthfilling wine with a sweet spiced finish.
No wonder it's sold out at the winery!

Evans & Tate 'Metricup Road' Shiraz, Margaret River Australia
Readers rated this wine:
Some serious chops!
Ripe briary berries and mulberries are layered with molten chocolate, fresh mint and sweet spice aromas. It is firm in the mouth (I suggest decanting) with grippy, dry tannins lashed to dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee bean flavours. The finish is chewy and trails savoury spices.
A wine that needs hard cheeses or meat to help soften and round out the palate.

Groom Shiraz, Barossa Valley Australia
Readers rated this wine:
Engaging sweet black cherries, roasted coffee beans, decadent mint chocolate wafers and baking spice aromas. The palate is supple and fresh and exactly what you expect in a Barossa Shiraz - chocolate liqueur and sunwarmed berry flavours are highlighted with sweet spice. Impressive weight and intensity, a slight saline quality to the palate and a lengthy finish.
Seems like a good wine to serve at a wedding (if you have the budget).

Penfolds 'Koonunga Hill' Shiraz~Cabernet, South Australia, 2010
Readers rated this wine:
Expected Penfolds quality and value in a structured wine scented with Damson plums and black currents, oak spice and pepper with smoked notes underscored with dark chocolate and leather. A solid masculine style with savoury flavours to offset sweet fruit. Plenty of spice, coffee and smoky cocoa flavours linger across the finish.
A good partner to grilled meats, hearty stews and pastas or hard cheeses.

Peter Lehmann 'Layers', Barossa Valley Australia
Readers rated this wine:
Made from Barossa Valley Shiraz, Tempranillo, Mourvedre and Grenache, the Layers has a new look.
Expect sweet black cherry, raspberry, chocolate mint wafers and baking spice with mocha and a hint of prune. The same dark chocolate dominates the palate and is layered with plum and berry flavours, roasted mocha coffee and toasted dark spice, which clings to the finish.
Solid, good balance and a very tasty red.
